SCREA Leadership Meets Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Group ‘B’ Status for Railway Engineers

That is a significant development for the Indian Railway engineering community. Representation by the South Central Railway Engineers Association (SCREA) directly to the Union Finance Minister ensures that the long-standing demands of Junior Engineers (JEs) and Senior Section Engineers (SSEs) are heard at the highest levels of governance.

  • The Representatives: Er. Ramprasad (SSE/Pway/I/MBNR) and Er. Bhaskar (SSE/Tele) successfully brought forward the core grievances of field engineers.
  • The Location & Date: The interaction took place on 04th June 2026 during the minister’s visit to Mahabubnagar, Telangana. [1]
  • Core Agenda: Discussions centered heavily around pay anomalies, stagnation, and pay-related issues impacting JEs and SSEs.
  • The Outcome: Hon’ble FM Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman Ji acknowledged the gravity of the matter and agreed to write a formal letter to the Hon’ble Minister of Railways (MR) to advocate for the allotment of Group ‘B’ (Gazetted/Non-Gazetted) status to Railway Engineers.

For years, railway technical supervisors and engineers have demanded Group ‘B’ status to align with other central government departments. Securing this status would introduce several vital reforms:

  1. Enhanced Career Progression: It helps mitigate severe career stagnation, allowing SSEs a smoother promotional avenue into Group ‘A’ managerial cadres.
  2. Improved Working Benefits: Group ‘B’ status grants administrative and execution powers that match the high level of safety and operational responsibility these engineers shoulder daily.
  3. Parity with Other Ministries: It rectifies historical anomalies where engineers with similar qualifications and responsibilities in other government departments enjoy higher status and better pay structures.

This assurance from the Finance Minister marks a positive step forward. Official tracking of the subsequent communication between the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Railways will reveal how this translates into executive action.
